Why KALBITOR?
Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a variable and unpredictable disease; attacks can happen anytime and anywhere. Some people with HAE take medicine on a regular basis to help prevent attacks. Even with preventive treatment, attacks can happen anyway. This is why it is so important to have a treatment plan in place to ensure that you are ready to treat your next acute HAE attack.
KALBITOR (pronounced KAL-bit-or) is a prescription medicine used to treat sudden HAE attacks in patients 16 years of age and older. KALBITOR is not a cure for HAE.
KALBITOR is given in a series of 3 injections just under-the-skin (subcutaneously) and is approved for all acute HAE attack locations including:
- Face
- Hands
- Feet
- Genitals (sex organs)
- Abdomen (stomach)
- Larynx (throat)
KALBITOR was proven effective in clinical trials where most patients treated with KALBITOR had:
- Reduction in acute attack symptoms at 4 hours
- Sustained improvement of symptoms at 24 hours
It is not a blood product. The active ingredient in KALBITOR injection is ecallantide, which is a small protein made in yeast cells.
Serious allergic reactions have been known to occur in patients treated with KALBITOR. See potential Side Effects.
KALBITOR should only be administered by a doctor or a nurse in a healthcare setting, such as your doctor's office or local hospital, where allergic reactions and hereditary angioedema can be treated.
